Herbs survived the centuries

The modern Danish pharmaceutical industry is strong and based on original research.

But already in the Middle Ages hospital doctors –at that time the monks – treated the sick with original drugs made from herbs.

In 1175 an Augustinian monastery moved to  Aebelholt – 25 miles north of Copenhagen. The move was made possible by large donations from the archbishop and the warrior Absalon also known as the founder of Copenhagen.

For the next nearly 400 years - until the Reformation - sick people were treated by the monks.

During excavations in the middle of last century, about 800 skeletons were found indicating that comprehensive medical treatments had taken place in the hospital.

Everything indicated that the monks were skillful physicians and surgeons. They treated injuries from fighting and diseases like tuberculosis, syphilis and dental problems.

In the soil from the excavations seeds from the ancient medicinal herbs – e.g.  Henbane (the poison poured in Hamlets father’s ear) and the poison Hemlock (used to kill Socrates) were found.

The seeds had survived half a millennium.
